MUNS Düsseldorf e.V.

Model United Nations Society Düsseldorf

Report: EuroMUN 2017

This year’s MUNS Düsseldorf delegation, consisting of 5 ambitious ladies, took part in one of Europe’s biggest Model UN’s : EuroMUN in Maastricht. The EuroMUN was celebrating it’s 10th Anniversary with the motto  „Global Challenges: Pursuing Integration“ and celebrated it with 500 delegates from all over the world. The conference took place in April and lasted 5 days.

As we wanted to explore the city of Maastricht, we decided to arrive one day earlier, on Tuesday, in order to do so and it was worth it! The small city immediately charms you with its cobbled streets, it’s many restaurants and cafés, as well as the Maas shores and the many students riding on bikes to class. Then on Wednesday we were able to register, get our badges and attend the Opening Ceremony that included interesting key note speakers that talked about the effect of Trump on America and the world (Dr. Roberta Haar), the functioning and impact of lobbyism within the EU (Pascoe Sabido) and the actions we can take to tackle labour law infringements (Mark Kawakami).

On Thursday began the real deal, when each of us started in their committees in order to debate and create resolutions, regulations and directives on topics such as „The European Border and Coast Guard Regulation“, „Innovative measures towards cutting down CO2 levels“ or „Regulations on treatment of refugees attempting to cross borders“. Our University was represented in  the UNHCR, the Climate Summit, the European Parliament and the Consilium. The two latter ones, being special EuroMUN simulations that stood out, wanting to be as realistic as possible by allowing the two institutions to collaborate and experience the real process of EU policy making.

Of course we did not only work long hours in a conference centre, the organizers had established a great social program consisting of a Pub Crawl on Thursday evening that took to us to various bars of the city where we could get to know our fellow delegates better, a Neon Party on Friday night that proved to be very fun and colorful and a formal Delegate’s Ball on Saturday evening under the motto of the „50’s“ that saw a comeback in petticoats, pencil skirts and fedora hats!

Then on Sunday after the last sessions took place and the resolutions, regulations and directives were voted upon and when passed, greatly celebrated, the Closing Ceremony ended this intensive but very enriching experience. We had a great time at EuroMUN and enjoyed learning a lot about the countries and Parliamentarians we got to represent. We are also glad we get to call people from all over the world our new friends – and that is one of the main perks of Model UNs!

UN Bonn Visit

IMGP8284In February we had the opportunity to visit the German UN Headquarters in Bonn and learn more about the Organisation and its many projects and operations around the world. It is truly amazing how many lives the work of the United Nations are being touched every single day. At the end of our visit our guide took us to the top of the building from where we were treated with a wonderful view over the former capital of Germany.

We are very grateful for this chance and we thank the UN Bonn for this very interesting visit!
